Definition of clearance: Clearance is an imaginary volume of plasma from which drug is completely removed in unit time.
Explanation: Due to elimination, the concentration of drug falls throughout the plasma. Thus, in reality, there is no particular portion of plasma from which drug is completely removed. So to understand how much drug is being eliminated, we imagine that from certain portion of plasma, the is completely removed, and in the remaining portion, its concentration has remained same as in the beginning.
